Emergent diseases of the gastrointestinal tract may
present in many ways, from the oral cavity to the rectum. Whether the management
of a condition associated with the GI tract is managed medically or surgically,
patients can have unique anesthetic and analgesic needs that present challenges
to anesthetic providers. It is important that practitioners are well-equipped to
identify physiologic alterations that may occur acutely and respond accordingly
to provide safe anesthesia to small animal patients. Anesthetic monitoring as well
as formulation of a balanced anesthetic and multimodal analgesic plans will be discussed.
