Dairy and beef cattle face different environments, management systems, and
public perceptions — but at the core, their welfare needs are the same. In this
joint session, Dr. Michelle Schack (dairy veterinarian) and Dr. Julia Herman
(beef veterinarian, NCBA) will explore the parallels and differences in cattle
welfare across sectors. From housing to handling to consumer expectations, we
will highlight where the industries align, where they diverge, and what
veterinarians can learn from each other. Attendees will leave with a broader
understanding of cattle welfare across the food system and practical ways to
communicate these insights to both producers and the public.
