You may start a search for veterinary clinical studies at any time by clicking on ‘Find Studies’ in the menu bar above. The AAHSD is maintained to add new studies as they are submitted and to update the recruiting status of all of the studies listed on the database. Studies that have been completed may be updated with the results of that study, when finalized. Users are encouraged to check the site frequently for new study listings and/or updates to studies that they have previously viewed.
How to Start a Search of the AAHSD
Individuals may conduct a search for studies within the AAHSD by either keyword(s); species; country; field of veterinary medicine; or any combination of the above. Individuals may also browse all listings in the AAHSD. Individuals may refine the results returned by any of these search methods by selecting additional search criteria in the left column of the search results page. Individuals may also search for the final outcomes of completed clinical studies listed on the AAHSD.
How to Search By Keyword(s)
To search by keyword(s), such as the name of a disease or name of a therapy, use the keyword search box found on the search page to begin searching for clinical studies:
- Enter one or more words in the search box and then click on the Search button.
- A list of search results will be displayed. The total number of studies found is shown at the top, along with your search terms.
- Actively recruiting studies will be listed first, followed by any studies meeting the search criteria that have been completed. The search results will show the species of animal being recruited for each trial, as well as the location(s) of the study, the recruitment status, and a portion of the project narrative. You may find more details for any study by clicking on 'Find Out More'.
Search Tips
- Common search words include the names of diseases or conditions and specific drugs or treatments (known as interventions).
- Search words must be spelled correctly to find relevant studies. Make sure to verify the correct spelling or try typing in just a portion of the word that you are confident of the spelling (for example, you could type in "pheo" as a search for studies for animals diagnosed with "pheochromocytoma").
- You can enter one or more words in the search box. Multiple words or phrases can be included in a search by typing AND (in uppercase letters) between the words or phrases.
How to Search By Species
To search for a study for a particular species of animal, such as a ‘dog’ or a ‘horse’, use the species drop-down box found on the search page. You may select one or more species for your search, or select “all species” to include every animal species in your search.
Search Tips
- Livestock includes ruminants (cows, sheep, goats), pigs, and poultry (chickens, turkeys), regardless of the intended purpose of the animal.
- "All species" is the default search option. If you type "lymphoma" into the keyword search and do not select an option from the species drop-down box, all study listings related to lymphoma in the database will be returned in the results, regardless of whether that study includes cows, horses, dogs, etc. Select a species from the drop-down box to narrow the search results returned if you are only interested in studies related to a particular species of animal.
How to Search By Country
To search for clinical studies in the United States or Canada select the appropriate country from the drop-down box on the search page. Only countries with studies will display, so if your country does not have any studies, please check back at another time, as studies are frequently added.
Search Tips
- "All countries" is the default search option. If you type "lymphoma" into the keyword search and do not select one of the country options, all study listings related to lymphoma in the database will be returned in the results, regardless of which country that the studies are being conducted in. Select one of the countries to narrow the search results returned if you are only interested in studies in the country in which you reside.
How to Search By Field of Veterinary Medicine
To search by field of veterinary medicine, such as oncology or cardiology, use the drop-down box found on the home page.
Search Tips
- "All fields" is the default search option. If you type "sarcoma" into the keyword search and do not select an option from the field of veterinary medicine drop-down box, all study listings related to sarcoma in the database will be returned in the results, regardless of the body system affected by the sarcoma. Select a field of veterinary medicine from the drop-down box to narrow the search results returned if you are only interested in studies related to a particular body system, such as sarcomas affecting the skin, or the bone, etc.
How to Browse All Listings in the AAHSD
To see all study listings in the AAHSD, simply click the 'Show all studies' button and leave all other fields blank.
How to Narrow Your Search Results
Once a basic search has been performed, users may narrow their search results by using one or more of the options under 'Filter Search' in the column on the left side of the search results page. Users may narrow their results by:
Species – if not performed as part of the initial search, users have the option of narrowing their search results to one or more species of animals with the 'species' drop-down box
Secondary Categories within a field of veterinary medicine – users may select more specific categories within a field of veterinary medicine to narrow their search results by expanding the 'field of veterinary medicine' menu option. For example, a user who performed an initial search for skin conditions in the 'Dermatology (skin)' field of veterinary medicine may elect to narrow their search results by selecting 'pyoderma' under the 'Dermatology (skin)' field of veterinary medicine menu.
Location – users may select more specific locations within a country by expanding the 'location' menu option. Users may elect to narrow their search results to one or more specific states within the U.S.; or to one or more provinces within Canada by expanding the 'Location' menu and selecting one or more of those options.
Recruitment status of the study – users may select to narrow their search results for studies that are actively recruiting patients, or may narrow their search results to those studies that have been completed and have the results of their study posted, by expanding the 'Recruitment Status' menu and selecting one or more of those options.
Finding Study Results
Some study records include results of that study, either as text or as a link to a publication. Because the AAHSD was established in June, 2016, there are not likely to be many results in the AAHSD until 2017 or later. See Search for Outcomes for further information.
