Learn about common health conditions affecting backyard
flocks. Explore diseases related to respiratory, musculoskeletal, reproductive,
gastrointestinal, and dermatologic conditions, and gain insight into the factors
that contribute to each. Because poultry often hide clinical signs and are
classified as food animals, treatment options can be limited, and effective
disease prevention is essential. Veterinarians must adhere to strict regulatory
requirements, including the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) and Extralabel Drug
Use (ELDU) provisions under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of
1994 (AMDUCA)—which both require an in-person, established
veterinarian-client-patient-relationship. Learner will come away understanding
the unique compliance responsibilities associated with poultry care and
practical disease prevention strategies.
