This course provides an overview of the AVMA Guidelines
for the Depopulation of Animals (2026 edition), with an emphasis on ethical
decision-making and inhalant methods. Participants will learn how depopulation
differs from euthanasia and humane slaughter, the rationale for
situation-specific guidance, and the tiered classification system used to
evaluate method appropriateness. Ethical considerations are discussed, including
the veterinarian’s role in balancing animal welfare, public health, human
safety, regulatory requirements, and societal expectations during crisis situations.
