Veterinarians and animal care professionals working with zoological species are responsible for recognizing and managing pain across a wide range of taxa, from exotic pets to free-ranging wildlife. Pain in nondomestic animals presents unique challenges, as many species mask clinical signs and there is limited species-specific research to guide assessment and treatment. This webinar explores the distinction between nociception and pain, examines the biological and ethical considerations surrounding pain perception across species, and highlights the complexities of evaluating pain in animals that cannot verbally communicate. It also reviews current methodologies for pain assessment—including behavioral, physiological, and observational tools—and outlines commonly used analgesic drug classes in zoological medicine. Emphasis is placed on existing knowledge gaps, the limitations of available data, and the importance of applying a welfare-focused, precautionary approach to pain management across diverse species.
